Diving for White Gold
Ted Becks is happy when golfers have a bad game. Every year, golfers in the USA lose more than 2.5 billion golf balls. Many of these balls fall into ponds and lakes on golf courses. This is good news for Ted 1.
On weekdays, Ted arrives at the golf course at about 10 a.m. Many golfers play early in the morning before they go to work, so he waits for them to leave. First, he puts on his diving suit and oxygen tank. Then he jumps into a pond and dives to the bottom. Ted moves around slowly on his hands and knees 2.
The job is not easy. The water is very dirty, 3. [выпадающий список], and he usually cannot see anything. He finds the balls by carefully touching the ground with his hands. However, he knows how to work safely and does not let fear stop him.
Ted usually works for five hours a day. During this time, he can collect about 2,500 balls. The company pays him ten cents for each ball, 4. [выпадающий список]. Golf balls are not the only things Ted finds. Sometimes he discovers computers, washing machines, and even cars in the ponds!

Life in the Savannah
There are many different types of animals that live in the vast and open savannah. The species found in savannahs vary greatly by the geographic location of the biome.
Animals that are native to African savannahs include African elephants, zebras, horses, and tall giraffes. Many animals in the savannah are herbivores, which means they eat plants, and there is plenty of grass in the savannah for them to feed on. During the rainy months, animals thrive in the savannah because there is abundant food and water everywhere, but the rainy season is only half the year.
During the dry season, surface water from the rain is quickly absorbed into the ground by thirsty soils. The competition for water during the dry season is so intense that most birds and many of the large mammals migrate elsewhere in search of water. Depending on the severity of the drought, the migration may be to a place nearby, or far away across the landscape.
The dry season is often associated with dangerous fires that sweep across the grasslands. Many insects with short life spans die in these fires, but the birds and larger animals are usually able to fly or run to safety.
Although small burrowing animals probably can’t outrun the flames, they often survive the fire by burying themselves deep into the ground and remaining there until the flames are gone.
Some birds, such as the fork-tailed drongos, don’t flee the fires; they actually fly toward the fires. For these clever birds, fire means dinner. They eat the fleeing or flame-roasted insects that escape from the burning grass.
What determines which animals live in the savannah?
How long the rainy season lasts.
The number of plants growing there.
Where in the world the savannah is.+
What do we learn about herbivores in the savannah?
They have enough food because grass grows there. +
They are the only animals native to Africa.
They eat both plants and small insects.
Why is the rainy season a good time for savannah animals?
All birds return from migration.
Food and water are easy to find. +
There are no fires during the rain.
How long does the rainy season last?
Only a few weeks
Most of the year
About six months +
What happens to rainwater when the dry season begins?
It goes into the dry ground very fast. +
It stays in small lakes on the surface.
Animals drink all of it in a few days.
Why do many birds and large animals leave the savannah?
The grass becomes too dry to eat.
It is too difficult to find water. +
They are afraid of the fires.
What factor decides how far the animals migrate?
The direction of the fires.
How serious the drought is. +
The size of the animal group.
Which animals usually die in the savannah fires?
Birds that cannot fly fast enough.
Small animals that live underground.
Insects that do not live very long. +
How do burrowing animals stay safe from fire?
They hide under the ground until the fire ends. +
They run away faster than the flames.
They jump into rivers and lakes.
Why do fork-tailed drongos fly towards a fire?
They want to protect their nests from the flames.
They like the warm air above the burning grass.
They can catch insects that are running from the fire. +
