A. Dr. Mickey Pardo, a researcher at Cornell University, was interested in the way the African elephants interact with each other. These social animals with developed brains produce various sounds, from quiet rumbles to loud trumpets. Inspired by dolphin behaviour, where individuals use unique whistles as
names, Dr. Pardo wanted to find out if elephants might have similar names based on their vocalizations. His study aimed to uncover whether elephants, like dolphins, use specific sounds to identify each other. B. Researchers used Artificial Intelligence to analyse 469 recordings of rumbling noises made by wild African elephants in Kenya from 1986 to 2022. Despite the analysis, they couldn’t identify specific elements in these rumblings that might indicate individual names, even when certain elephants were absent.
This information is important for gaining a deeper understanding of elephant communication, social structures, and the ways in which these animals interact within their herds. C. Elephants at the Houston Zoo in Texas are participating in yoga workouts to stay flexible and healthy. According to a zoo blog, 12 Asian elephants participate in daily yoga-like movements, which stimulate both their minds and
bodies. Kristin Windle, the zoo’s elephant supervisor, says that these sessions also strengthen the relations between caretakers and elephants. The movements help increase their flexibility and allow caregivers to closely monitor their health, including their skin, feet, and oral health.
D. Yoga sessions at the Houston Zoo are optional for elephants, lasting between 30 seconds to five minutes. The exercises are customized for the elephants and imitate their natural movements, such as lifting feet, balancing on two legs, and stretching. If the elephants don’t want to get involved, or if they don’t want to keep working with it, they can just walk away. Participants receive treats like fruit or bread afterward. Zookeeper Windle explained that elephants can leave if they choose, but they won’t receive treats.
