Hi, Mum! Joe, you’re home late. It’s 4 o’clock. The bus was 15 minutes late. We only left at a quarter to 4. How was school today? Football practice was great. We used the sports hall because it was too wet to play on the school field or in the park. Do your football clothes need washing? My shorts are fine, but the t-shirt is dirty and the socks too. Give them to me then. Is your next match soon? Yes, it was on the 18th of March but they’ve changed it to the 15th. Oh, and I have to pay the teacher by the 12th.
— More money, I’ve already given you £4.50.
— That was just for the bus. I also want to get the photo of my team and that’s £2.25.
— OK, but that’s £6.75 for everything. It’s quite a lot.
— Not really, Mum. Anyhow, can I go and do my homework now?
— You’ve got History to do, haven’t you?
— I did that yesterday but I have to do Maths homework by tomorrow.
— What about Science?
— That’s OK, that’s next week.

Victoria Station Lost Property Department. Our offices are closed at the moment. Please, leave a message after the tone. Good morning, my name is Alan Davis and I’m ringing to see if anyone handed in a sports bag last night. I think I left it on the train, that is, the 6:45 from Richmond. I got off in a hurry and, well, just forgot to pick it up. It’s dark blue and has four white stripes down one side. The zip is red and it should have a key ring attached to one of the handles. The bag is full of dirty football clothes. I’m sorry about that, but I had a football training last night. Anyway, if you find the bag, please contact me at home. The number is… Hold on a second… zero, three, four, one, five, two, nine, seven, eight, seven. I’ll repeat that – zero, three, four, one, five, two, nine, seven, eight, seven. Oh, and as I said my name is Alan, Alan Davis. Well, thanks very much. Bye!

Good evening, it’s 9 p.m. on Sunday, the 23rd of November and you are listening to Movie Magic on Radio Four with me, Harry Parsons. On last week’s programme we were talking about the best movies of the 1980s. This week we are going to talk about the work of my all-time favourite director Alfred Hitchcock. So, who was Alfred Hitchcock? Well, he was born in London at the very end of the 19th century, in 1899. His father sold chickens for a living, but Alfred was very interested in drawing and he used to write and design captions for silent films. Before long he became a film director. His first successful film was The Lodger in 1926. It was a silent film about a murderer in 19th century London.
In 1928, he made the film called Blackmail which was the first British talking picture. Hitchcock made several films in England, but it was when he moved to Hollywood that he became really successful. In his 1954 film Rear Window a photographer has to stay in his room because he has broken his leg. He sees somebody being murdered in the house opposite. In The Man Who Knew Too Much James Stewart and Doris Day play a couple whose son is kidnapped by spies. Hitchcock is most famous for frightening thrillers like Psycho, set in a lonely motel, and The Birds. In this film, set in California, flocks of birds attack and kill human beings. Hitchcock was an expert at mixing comedy and terror and all his most frightening films have comic touches. An example of his sense of humour was that he liked to make a brief appearance in all his films. Never a handsome man, he was short and overweight, you can spot him playing a passerby or sitting reading a newspaper on a train. He died in 1980.
